NINE

When a drenched Heather and Ant walked through the front door of the Cot’, William and Holly sat on the couch, quietly waiting for Heather to return from her grand adventure this morning. She looked back and forth between them—Holly had a look of remorse on her face, and William’s face had judgment written all over it. They both looked expectantly at Heather, all except for Pansy. As usual, her gaze was focused on William as she sat there in his lap, waiting for him to pet her.

Heather didn’t understand what could have happened over the few hours she had been gone, and at that point, she didn’t care. She’d had such a lovely time with Lars that morning, and this evening had the makings to be even more spectacular.

“I’m so sorry, Heather! It slipped out. I swear . . . it was a complete accident.” Holly stood up and walked into the kitchen, returning with a large pot of her home-brewed herbal tea. She poured Heather a generous helping and placed it on the table next to her.

“What’s going on, guys? I don’t understand.” Heather gulped down a large amount of the delicious, aromatic tea and placed it back down. “Does he know our secret?”

William stood up, Pansy still attached to his body, as usual. “Oh, he knows! He knows all about the dead body you’ve been being so secretive about. And he knows that you talked his girlfriend into breaking into a crime scene! What in the world were you two thinking?” He looked at Heather, then over at Holly, who still looked upset about the whole ordeal.

“Please don’t be mad at Holly!” Heather begged. “Nothing like this has ever happened in my life, and I just didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to go over there alone. I’m so sorry, William. Can you ever forgive me?”

William’s face suddenly softened. “Wait a minute, Heather! I’m not mad at either of you. I’m more concerned than anything else. Holly is the love of my life, and you’re one of my very best friends and mentors. I’d never forgive myself if something happened to either of you, and I did nothing to help.”

“Oh,” Heather said, feeling relieved that she hadn’t destroyed one of her most treasured friendships. “You want to help? Is that what this is about?”

William walked over to Heather and hugged her tightly. “Yes, of course, I want to help you.” He pulled away from the hug and smiled down at Heather. “Now, with all that business out of the way, is there anything I can do to help you through this traumatic situation?”

Holly stepped forward. “That’s why I felt I had to tell him about it, Heather. So, please don’t be mad. I think, more than anyone else, William has the chops to help us get closer to figuring out what happened at the potting shed.

Heather smiled at Holly. “No, of course, I’m not mad at you. But what are you thinking?”

“Another field trip to the potting shed, this time with Mr.
